Grand Designs and its long-term presenter, Kevin McCloud, have been a source of trustworthy home-building advice and inspiration since its conception in 1999. Millions of viewers have watched Grand Designs help to give people their dream home; this time, at Grand Designs Live, we can see Grand Designs’ inaugral design.
What could be a better way to showcase the programme’s excellence than through leading by example with their first-ever show home ‘The House of Grand Ideas’?
The show home will be presented by OVO, a green technology company, at Grand Designs Live, which is celebrating its 18th year running.
OVO is a fitting main sponsor for the event: The show home revolves around sustainable building and interiors and OVO, which distinguishes itself from other energy and technology providers through their aims to provide a fair and sustainable service for all customers, its investment in market-leading technology and its ‘Plan Zero’ to help customers cut their carbon emissions, is a market leader in sustainable practices.
The show home has come at a pivotal time. Market research conducted by OVO shows that British people’s appetite for greener energy solutions is stronger than ever before.
A combination of the energy-driven cost of living crisis and heightened awareness of the damage fossil fuels have on the environment has resulted in some 61% of Brits considering transitioning to green technology to save on monthly bills and over a third (36%) hoping to switch in order to live more sustainably.
During Grand Designs Live, which is being held at Birmingham NEC until the 8th October 2023, green technology experts from OVO will be on-hand for free one-on-one consultations in the show-home to advise attendees of good options for their homes.
They will demonstrate how electric vehicle chargers by Indra, solar technology, heat pumps, insulation panels, smart metres and smart thermostats by tado° can integrate easily into different homes while simultaneously cutting energy costs without compromising on style.
Visitors to Grand Designs Live can expect a tour of The House of Grand Ideas which particularly emphasises its focus on style and substance with features such as a baby Yamaha grand piano, a bespoke Leverint Lighting chandelier, and a mural by Graham & Brown which was awarded ‘Design of the Year’.
Unsurprisingly, no detail has been spared in this show home. The stunning kitchen is by Nolte, and fitted with Miele appliances, long considered one of the best in the biz. A crafted living space by Penny Ann interiors and visitors can have their childhood dream-realised: there is even a cinema room created by Jooced.
Despite all the innovative technology, the show home still feels homely, boasting a whimsical and patterned bedroom designed by Sparrow & Plumb, which is kitted out with a need not a want: a copper bath.
Grand Designs has not stopped at interiors. The outdoor experience is something to behold: laid against the backdrop of Millboard cladding and a resin bound driveway by Vuba, the outdoor area considers home-owners’ wellness with an ice bath by Brass Monkey, an infrared sauna which is known to improve circulation and speed up muscle recovery, and even a copper outdoor shower, which would be a saving grace for any sea-swimmers or muddy dogs!
The House of Grand Ideas drives home the concept that green homes do not require compromise. At its essence, a home is somewhere which should keep families safe and warm; through adapting homes to greener technology and energy sources, we are safeguarding the futures of families across the globe.
